Troublemakers

I wrote a blog some years ago about the demoralising effects on society and individuals of so-called petty crimes, anti-social behaviour.

I mentioned mainly littering, fly-tipping and vandalism. I find it quite extraordinary for instance that some people will be able to enjoy and appreciate the scenery of an area, and go out of their way to get there for a picnic or walk. Then, when they are leaving, dump trash to spoil it for others, and endanger wildlife.

Yesterday a different kind of offence caused us anger and puzzlement. Spock is happy for me to write about this.

We were booked in to our favourite restaurant for an early supper. Before showering Spock nipped out for a quick walk with one of our dogs. She is not good with strangers, and barks at other dogs, so he often takes her onto an ancient meadow near us, which is usually quiet late afternoon.

They did a couple of circuits, and he made towards the gates. He was about 50 yards away in dimming light, and noticed a couple of young lads, aged around 15/16 standing to the side of the gate, one apparently having a pee.

He was not offended, the nearest public loos are a mile away, so he stayed put, talking to the dog, to spare them any embarrassment. He was astonished when he resumed walking, the lad ran towards him, shoved his face right in his, shouting "What do you think you're doing, staring at me having a p*ss?" Spock laughed in amazement, told him he was stupid, he could barely see him in the dusk. The response was "If I see you here again I'll smash your ******* face in"

Spock gave him a hefty push, and some blunt advice! Although young, the lad was nearly as tall as Spock. The other boy stayed silent.

Spock was particularly worried that our dog would either bite them (putting us and her in a worrying situation) or she would get kicked. Luckily neither happened.

As he left the meadow the lad bawled "Paedophile!" after him.

He got back very agitated, and I insisted that he report the matter to the local police. He did this using an online complaint form. I have little faith in the common sense of the law any more and did not want to risk any repercussions. We were both also very aware that the possible use of knives adds another worrying aspect to what might normally be a minor altercation.

Using the word paedophile in this sort of situation is just horrible, and he is still angry and shaken. Maybe the kids were egging each other on, having a joke. We can't see the funny side at all!
