The Joy of Necessities

When was the last time you felt grateful not only for a cup of coffee or tea but also for the opportunity to drink it without spilling it down yourself?

My dear Dad may be facing end-of-life as he fights off sepsis and other substantial problems at the age of 95. Sitting by his hospital bedside and engaging with him when he is able has given me a fresh and deep gratitude for basics.

I’m feeling grateful that I can get to the bathroom.

I’m feeling grateful that I can enjoy my food and drink.

I’m feeling grateful that I can sleep on my side if I want to.

I’m feeling grateful that I have quiet to enjoy uninterrupted sleep.

The list is endless.

At this time, Dad would give almost anything to enjoy these necessities that we naturally take for granted. Thus I thought it would be very healthy for us today to enjoy our own basic needs being met with intentional awareness.

May I warmly invite you to share in the comments the simple necessities and treats, activities and ‘normal life’ simplicities that you could enjoy intentionally today? Let’s not worry about repeating what anybody else writes.

A final thought, on the way back from the hospital I intentionally chose to listen to rock music. It was so easy for me to access what I wanted to listen to. We are so blessed by our access to necessities, bare or sophisticated, simple or complicated.
