Waking in the night, the silence just hangs there, waiting for you to be aware of it and then it pounces! It says, yippee, you are awake, so I am going to bombard your thought processes with all those little annoyances or worries. However much you try and get back to sleep and ignore it, it won't go away. Those things which are keeping you awake are five times worse because there is nothing to stop them invading your space.
During the day, you can experience the silence, but there can be things to distract you. Maybe go for a walk, listen to the radio or music, carry out a task around your home. You could go and see a friend.
This silence issue is something that has been bugging me for a while. There are times when silence is necessary. For me, it can be when sorting out paperwork, maybe post that has arrived during the previous week. I need to be able to 'read' and study said paperwork. If I'm working on my accounts, then the old grey matter needs to be able to concentrate and make sure I don't make mistakes.
Often in the evening, I will turn the television off. I need, as my dear Mum used to say, a bit of hush!
I've got a housing development nearby and although they don't work at the weekends, during the week, they are out there, diggers and excavators, saws and pile drivers, thump thump thump. Even this latest heatwave hasn't stopped them! Even when I go on my morning constitutional, I can be walking across a farmers field and I can hear the development. Shame.
I walk early most mornings, and although not in total silence. The sound of the birds and trees are calming and welcome. So maybe I won't have silence all the time.
So fellow Moodscopers, how does silence affect you, if at all? I would be interested to know.
