Is respect earned not given?

Respect is something most of us want, but it is not always given freely.

I have noticed in the last few years there are signs or messages about having respect for workers who deal with the public. I have walked in a call centre and have experienced very rude people who are impatient. I understand people need to be kind in person or over the phone. However, it should go both ways, customers need respect too. I have had customer service workers be patronising and sarcastic because I was slow in understanding how to fill out a form online etc.

In personal relationships, respect is a two-way street. You cannot expect someone to respect you if you do not show them the same respect. It is about listening, being dependable, and appreciating the other person’s thoughts and ideas.

It is often the small, consistent actions that get respect. Having empathy and listening are ways to demonstrate respect toward others. When people see that you value their time, thoughts, and feelings, you are more likely to gain their respect.

Even in tricky situations, staying calm and handling conflicts calmly can make others impressed by your peaceful behaviour.

Respect—such a small word, but it means so much and can be effective in communicating with others.

Do you feel respect is earned not given? What do you mean by respect? Any thoughts or feedback about earning respect and respecting others?
