I don’t notice if a man has shaved his moustache until weeks later, or if someone is wearing new clothes. I do notice people’s moods and feelings as I can often sense if someone is upset or struggling.
I don’t notice paintings or items hanging on walls and have asked if it is something new when it has been there for many months.
There are many books and television shows with amateur detectives from all occupations. The one thing they all have in common is their ability to be attentive to the tiniest clue.
We are often distracted by our phones, our computers, Fitbit watches and many other electronic noises and visual stimulation. I am wondering if this makes us less likely to observe our environment.
There are often media campaigns asking us to be attentive of our physical and mental health. We are also encouraged to be aware of other people’s moods and health and changes in their behaviour. For example, the RUOK day
When does being attentive to our surroundings verge on being seen by others as the stereotypical busybody? Do you see yourself like a Sherlock Holmes able to deduce many things about a person simply by being quick to notice things and interpret what they may mean?
