How do you cope with big emotions?

I was watching a mum deal with preschoolers crying. She said when you have a big emotion what helps you. The child said that blowing bubbles, cuddling her favourite toys, hugging mummy and daddy and listening to her favourite songs and TV shows all help her.

We all have big emotions at times and can be overwhelming. I like that children are being given skills to cope that can help adults.

Noticing and naming your feelings can help, asking what I am thinking, and what I feel in my body. Breathing. moving, walking outside, talking to someone who will listen but not try to solve your problems. I find that writing sometimes helps with strong feelings but when I am crying a lot and feeling low, I just stare at a blank page and am frustrated I cannot write one word.

I too like blowing bubbles, especially one of those bubble machines, it does not make my big emotions go away but it is relaxing and distracting. I also like to walk in a park or look at trees and flowers as it gives me time to breathe and clear my mind. I have a few songs I like singing in the shower with the door closed!!

Children and adults both need to acknowledge their feelings and why they feel a certain way. How do you cope with strong feelings, big emotions?

Do you think it is helpful for children to learn skills to cope with their emotions?

Were your parents like mine and most people my age when they told you to stop crying and acting like a baby? A friend's dad said we have no time for your emotions.
