Do you like a pithy quote? Every day, we have an excellent thought for the day to accompany the theme of the blog. I find them very inspiring. I also love the practical sayings of Solomon – reputed to be a rather wise king.
Here’s one I can relate to: “Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared.” Have you ever caught a mood off someone else? I know I have ‘caught’ mannerisms and characteristics, even phrases from my parents – and my sons! This seems in harmony with the popular wisdom that suggests you become like the 5 people you spend most time around.
Well, if bad company corrupts good character, I’m sure it works the other way round – that good company promotes good character. Thus, I’ve begun thinking about the people I’d like to be more like. Perhaps you have a friend who is very peaceful and calm. You may have another who always has a cheerful word for everyone. Do you have a funny friend?
Watching ‘Poldark’ with my sister is a delight. Ross is my ideal ‘man’ – not squeaky clean but definitely noble. He thinks of others beyond himself, and treats most people with respect. He’s brave, visionary, hard-working, and diligent. I find myself feeling more noble after watching an episode. This may mean that it is enough to spend time watching the sort of person you’d like to be similar to.
If you were to pick one character trait, behaviour, or emotion that you’d like to have more of – that would make you feel even better about yourself – what is it? And who do you know who exhibits it? How could you spend more time in their good company?
