I’m weird.
(So are you.)
I know this to be true.
“Fjord,” is one of the words that pleases me.
As I’m growing older, tone of voice and choice of vocabulary is having a disproportionate effect on my wellbeing. I don’t like ‘screechy’ people with harsh tones. This may mean that sound is my main or lead sensory preference.
Some of us prefer visuals, some prefer textures and feelings, some rare individuals are most powerfully influenced by sounds.
Give me English pronounced in an Irish or Scandinavian accent… and I’m lost!
Understanding what your lead sensory preference is most delightfully helpful in helping develop a strategy for enhancing your wellbeing most rapidly and effectively.
So, let me ask you, when you think about your last happy holiday, what is the first thing that comes to mind… a picture, the sounds, or feelings? If you are really rare, it will be a scent or a taste! Of course, it will be ALL of these, but what is the FIRST that comes to mind?
If it is pictures, visuals, images, movies… this gives you a powerful way to enhance your mood control. Think in pictures of what you’d rather have.
If it is sounds, create a soundtrack for positive moods. And ask yourself, “Are there words and accents I really feel good when I hear?” If there are, how could you expose yourself to more of them? (I’m thinking of moving to Finland or Ireland or both!)
If it is textures, or weight, or warmth or the cool – physical feelings – these are seriously useful insights… or infeelings!
With a bit of reflection, you’ll be able to diagnose what senses make a positive impact on you. Your mission then is to simply expose yourself to situations where you are likely to experience more of those sensory stimuli.
Let me finish with very simple questions:
What do you see that makes you feel better?
What do you hear that makes you feel better?
What do you touch or experience through your body that makes you feel good?
What smells make you feel better?
What tastes lift your spirit?
