Today’s score – 26%

An old friend suggested a show at the Edinburgh Fringe. I often see a few things and this was not something I’d have picked. But good friendships work with any chat and any food, and if the show is great or if it isn’t, so we went. It was a dip back into 1980s anthems.

The performers were possibly around minus 20 back in the 80s. The sound system was raw and keen. The energy was ‘Kids from Fame’ with a steroid injection up the tail pipe and I think they were possibly running on intermittent food, beer and the pure adrenaline formed from performing in at least two different shows daily. I was full of admiration for their energy and courage, but I wondered how my head and ears would survive.

My god they were great. The musicians looked exactly as I remembered 80s musicians to look – like themselves, not moulded, dressed like shadows, nerdy concentration and quiet on the outside, enormously talented and thriving through every moment on the inside. The singers of the show threw themselves into the deep end from the first second and barely took breath. They were singing and playing bubble-gum 80s pop from a place which suggested they had in fact lived it. They knew their films.

Would I have chosen to go? Probably not. Was I glad I went? 100%

What is the moral of the story? If you have a friend who knows you aren’t feeling tip-top, trust them to pull you into the living once in a while. Here I am still benefitting from that, a number of weeks on.
