December is my favourite month

I'm sitting here at my kitchen table, having wisely changed my mind about taking a walk while the rain pours down outside. I feel blessed to have a home and a dry one. There are builders working next door,  digging into the foundations of our next door neighbours house (yes, working even in this weather). I live in an area that was once mined for its coal reserves, and there are hardly any houses or streets that are not affected by this at some point. Subsidence is a risk we have learnt to live with. Just like my tendency for low mood, particularly in winter.

For those who may recall, I have taken steps to make sure that, this winter, I have prepared a plan to support my health, mood and well-being, and I promised to check in every month to report on any progress.

I hope it isn't too early to call, but I have to admit that the familiar dread of dark nights and the tunnel of sadness has not appeared. This is good. I am even looking forward to Christmas.

So how have I managed to achieve this? To borrow from the metaphor of foundations, I began building my support months ago. You, dear Moodscoper, are part of that support. I asked for your advice, and I am following the wisdom of the tribe that understands. What is standing out as most effective for me, is the daily walk of about 5 miles. Best achieved in the morning if possible. Nutrition: every meal choice has to contain a range of micronutrients (I can get a bit boring about this, but trust me, it is worth doing the research). Keeping up with community events: I've joined a choir and we are preparing for our Christmas concert. A daily dose of my lightbox with my first cup of tea and lastly, going to bed early.

Yes, I know that we are still 3 months away from decent longer days and sun strength, but so far, my foundations seem to be holding. Thank you for your support.
