Crutch of the week

“I can’t change it” has been my crutch this week. It has helped me jump hurdles. When sending a message I didn’t want to, I said “I can’t change it” and just sent the message. Emails I’ve paused over, I said "I can't change it" and sent it. Uncomfortable events - deep breath in, said it, long sigh out.

Blasting through with that phrase as my armour has not made the tasks any easier, but it has made them doable. Like peeling off a plaster. Don’t rip it but peel steadily. Nike it - just do it. Or, as I often shout to my kids in half humour “More Elvis please” (less conversation, more action).

When depressed, actioning stuff can feel sludgy. There are many ifs and whys and maybes. We can be caught in a slow motion blur. And so the antidote is maybe to say “I can’t change it” then jump in with both feet.

I’m still stuck in depression and I can’t change it. Certainly not quickly. I can keep jumping in and trying. Take my hand? Let’s go.
