The red badge on my email notifications said 229. Two hundred and twenty nine emails needing attended to. Dread. Many of them needed deleted. Many needed a quick reply and file. Some needed a bit of work. But when you’ve been in the eye of the summer storm, starting the day around 5am and sometimes in bed near midnight (and sometimes with somebody coming in around 2am) then things must queue. They would each be dealt with, I’m an organised person, it was just a firefighting time.
I sat on the couch to have coffee. Freshly showered and with damp hair (I love summer for not having to dry my hair). I breathed out. When you breathe out, do you notice that a long exhale lets your shoulders come down?
I keep a bird bath filled with fresh water. But life had been so busy that it had gone unnoticed for a few hot days, it was bone dry! I watched as a pigeon had a little poke around it and I made a mental note to fill it asap.
Next moment, the pigeon had come right over to the window and climbed onto the chair sitting there. He stared at me deeply in my eyes. Whilst the robin has occasionally come to the chair, the pigeons never do. But this guy…either he really wanted a drink of water or he knew I was a little despondent.
Glimmers are everywhere if we look. I trusted him as my little guardian and I got myself off the couch, ignored the 229 emails and coffee, and stepped bare feet onto the not-cold path. Filling the bird bath, I appreciated his reminder to get outside, fill my lungs with fresh air and just breathe.
Fresh air is out there. It is abundant. They don’t even charge.
